Planetary Pairs

Ideas rose in clouds; I felt them collide until pairs interlocked, so to speak, making a stable combination - Henri Poincare

  • Planetary Pairs are the name that I give to close conjunctions between planets. Sometimes the pairings are of a compatible elemantal combination, and sometimes not; a fact that in itself is neither good nor bad, but rather more of a kind of sameness and difference that may cause connection, or emergence to occur. N.B. both of these would be a connection, but emergence is held to occur when incompatible, dissimilar, elements are combined.

The whole point of highlighting Planetary Pairs here is to draw attention to the examples so that they give some idea of the flavour of each combination, and so that the remarkable [and maybe otherwise inexplicable] connections between people add to the accumulation of evidence for Astrology as a thing. It should be noted that there are other connections possible - other aspects, so the pairing by conjunction is by no means the only option, but there is always a slightly greater similarity when two things are in the same location.

The most striking of Planetary Pairs are reckoned, by me, to be those where the elemental changes can be seen to be complementary, such as where Pluto turns fire into earth, while Jupiter turns earth into fire. In such cases the alchemy can be seen to produce a vicious or virtuous circle, and therefore perhaps a more extreme consequence, albeit with that a more limited collection of possibilities.

It should also be noted, that all planets are in relation with all other planets, at all times, and what may then be indicated by any specific relationship is not necessarily better, nor worse, for the sake of being similar, or dissimilar, in any particular way. The choice of 2 degrees as a maximum difference is quite arbitrary, and a product of us using base 10 for numbers. Perhaps I should reduce this to 1.1 degrees, or increase it to 3.3 degrees, or say that the elemental level of the planet should determine when a pairing occurs. The jury is still out on this one. Doubtless, some people who should be included will be omitted, and similarly, some will be included when all they have to recommend them is some chance conjunction of unproductive planets.

Also, it should be noted that planets could be expected to behave differently, as a pair, depending on which one comes first, whether they are retrograde, or nor, which houses they are in [difficult to know unless times are good], and what other planets get in on the act. So it is not just down to what sign, or sector, a planet occupies.

Planetary Pairs can be thought of in terms of the timing that they give to transits - as the transiting planet passes first one, and then the other, of the pair, there occurs a rhythm, a ta-da, and the closeness of the pair governs the closeness of the rhythm, and therefore how much meaning there is - as with telling a joke well, or a well played piece of music, it is all in the timing. Pairs that have precisely the same degree can't help but activate together. That is to say; the close planetary pair leaves no space for something else to emerge, so the person with this is more compelled to a narrower course. The person with some gap has opportunity to insert something as that relationship, and because the abstract of the planets defines the shape, the person can define the detail. Wher the gap is large, then the connection is weak, and cannot be expected to influence much. But, NOTA BENE this; the gap is not measured in distance, except in mundane terms; the connection is truly one of meaning, so it is that the trine can be closer than the square - both involve others, but the trine consists of the same sign element.

In terms of Free Will, the Planetary Pairs show a more driven character, this could be said to be one that is less free to do as it wishes. But on the other hand, the pairing may be thought of as being a marker of the nature of the spirit, so it is a marker of the will itself. Hence we could conclude that those with pairs may have a more concentrated will. As Arthur Schopenhauer suggests; while you are free to act on your desires, you are not free to choose what those desires are in the first place. Spaces allow us free choices, up to a point, and pairs by definition lack space. NB. the will is not just our desires, but every way in which we express our being. However, as previously mentioned, our will is the abstract shape, and we do get some choice in how to fill the gap.
