Modes

The signs of the Zodiac are not only categorized by elements, but also by mode. The modes are an indication of a kind of precedence - of those things in life that tend to take priority over other things. There are three modes; Cardinal, Fixed, and Mutable. Cardinality is seen as a tendency to lead, Fixedness as a tendency to remain, and Mutability as a tendency to change.

In Mandala Astrology, the modes derive from the elemental structure of each sign, which can only have one of three basic patterns. Each pattern is either forward leaning, balanced, or backwards; and although these patterns give a similarity to signs of the same mode, the elemental differences cause each sign to be most different. So signs of the same element have greater similarity than do signs of the same mode.

Aries - Fire from Water

Cancer - Water from Air.

Traditionally Cancer has the following characteristics: Watery; Cardinal; ruled by the Moon; exalts Jupiter; holds Saturn in detriment; holds Mars in fall.

Sagittarius - Fire from Earth.

Aquarius - Air from Fire.

Traditionally Aquarius has the following characteristics: Airy; Fixed; ruled by Saturn; exalts the Sun; holds the Sun in detriment.

Pisces - Water from Fire.

Traditionally Pisces has the following characteristics: Watery; Mutable; ruled by Jupiter; exalts Venus; holds Mercury in detriment; holds Saturn in fall.

The key of Pisces is water from fire, a full circle has been turned though all four elements, and finally we discover what looks very much like a holy grail of the self that is rooted in the truth of spirit - what then will we fill its holy space with?

For some, the answer to that is love, and they are the lucky ones because it could manifest as any one of the twelve houses, and love of whatever kind is the most appropriate spirit to drink from this cup. For others, their Pisces sector comes as something else, but whether it be religion or politics, addiction to alcohol or some other drug, gambling or detachment from the world of others, or some more acceptable obsession, say with work or the family, children or a lover, the underlying dynamic is that of feeling one's own truth, but hopefully not so strongly that we mistake it for everyone else's truth.

The downside of water from fire is that it can lead to a surprising rigidity in what is traditionally the softest of signs. The certainty that comes from this part of the self being surrounded by truth brings something akin to the single-mindedness of Aries, the self-confidence of Leo, and the impulsiveness of Sagittarius; a fieriness that drives the feelings with the fervour of the religious zealot. Aquarius may be revolutionary, but with Pisces the revolution is complete.
