Mercury is reckoned, by me, to be the alchemy of water into air, literally the creation of mind in accordance with desire. On its own this usually leads to curiosity, questioning, or even gossip.

Venus is reckoned to be the alchemy of water into fire, literally the creation of truth in accordance with desire. By itself this usually manifests as attraction or attractiveness, a desire to make or be made a part of someone's awareness. Often that leads to romantic love, with many forms of expression.

The non-complementary natures of Mercury and Venus output, as processes driven by the same input, would mean that whatever was wanted [desired], would be both the answer to a question, and knowing would be highly motivating, either for the self, or for the other. Whichever way, the indication with Planetary Pairs is of some extraordinary ability, or lack thereof.
