Starting a Chart Reading
When presented with an astrological chart, it can be a little daunting as to know where to start.
That slightly poetic start is actually very appropriate, because a poem would only be a piece of prose if it did not have internal structure, and internal structure is exactly what we are looking for when we look at a chart. So, where, or how, is the best way to go about it?
Before even starting, it is important to be aware of the data that went into producing the chart. This is because accuracy is everything, and very often the data will only be approximate, largely because people are generally very bad at documenting precisely when things happened, in terms of dates, times, and places. So if you know that the time of the chart was dubious, or simply unknown, then you need to discount certain features that are very time dependent:
- The Ascendant - this changes so quickly, 1 degree every 4 minutes, that it should only be considered important if a very precise time is known.
- The Moon - this moves 12 degrees a day, so allow a suitable number of degrees leeway when the time is uncertain.
- Quick planets - The Sun, Mercury and Venus can move relatively quickly, so may be a degree or so out, if times are uncertain.
Generally, where time in not known, charts are set for midday, and while midday is an important time during the day, it does make the chart a little less meaningful. An alternative to this is a process called Rectification. With this the astrologer looks at the chart for which a time is not known, and then makes a series of assumptions based on the events in the subjects life, and their percieved character - you could call it educated guesswork. However, there is one big clue available to the astrologer, and that is any children that the subject might have. Whenever the child particularly takes after the parent, then there is a high likelihood that the Sun position of the child [which should be known] will match the Ascendent of the parent. The reason for this is that the child will be learning by example, from the way that the parent is. Of course, we should expect that there will be other chart similarites in such cases.
The first impression that you should expect to see are the aspect lines in the chart. There are many styles of chart, but for me a good chart will colour the lines so that they immediately stand out as being either easy or difficult. I choose to colour the harsher aspects, the opposition and square, in red, while the trine and sextile I colour in blue. This way the effect is more obvious. One thing to note though, is that the blue lines just mean that there is greater similarity, so any effect takes place without effort, and that can just mean that things happen that are hard to resist. Red lines, which show more difference, may indicate more of a struggle, and require some action to be performed.
The next things to look for are conjunctions of planets. These are important because the planets that are together will always act together. This is a double edged sword, because it leads to a more single-minded effect, which may be a good thing, or a bad thing, but also it cuts down on the opportunities presented in the chart, as there will consequently be fewer sensitive/active points.
The next thing, only assuming the chart is set with good time data, is is to observe where most of the planets fall - are they to the left or right, top or bottom. This is a feature to bear in mind, because it shows whetehr the effect is to the self, or to others, or public, or private. Note: All the planets refer to how the subject is in themselves, but planets placed away from the Ascendant show an awareness of, or interaction with otherness in some manner.
Only after all these preliminaries do we need to come onto which planets are in which signs, decans, triplets and degrees. This step is first to see which planets are strongly placed, and so may be expected to have a big influence on the whole. Tradition has very specific rules for assessing the strength of a planet, but in my opinion approximately just under one half of tradition produces invalid results. I take an elemental approach and show this in the colouring of the sectors that form the perimeter of my charts. Here, brightly coloured sectors can be easily seen as 'switched on', or not. Although, be aware that transits will activate sectors that may show as inactive in a birth chart
Following all of these steps, you can then get on with looking at individual planets, and start making guesses at the kind of things that they may be indicating.
What I will usually do when considering a birth chart, is look to the slower moving planets, from Jupiter out to Pluto, but starting with Pluto, and consider them as a lifetime of transits, because then you can start to see the challenges in life that will have faced the owner of the chart, throughout the course of their life. What ought to be able to be seen are the early influences; for instance, an early brush with Pluto will indicate an encounter with the facts of reality, as applicable to somebody, in such a manner as to affect the adult by scarring the child.
Synastry Chart Reading
Synastry is the art of synthesising two individual things to understand how they relate. There are a number of techniques involved:.
- Direct comparison of the two charts, which amounts to treating one individual as transits to the other, and vice versa.
- Creation of a composite chart that combines the two in one. A composite chart can be taken as a chart of the relationship, and there are two kinds: The first is created by taking the midpoints between each planet in both charts. So the midpoint between the Sun position for each individual is taken to be the composite Sun, etc. The second method is the Davison chart; this is formed by drawing up a chart for the midpoints in both time and space, between the births of the two individuals. I would say that the standard composite chart represents the spirit of the relationship, while the Davison chart represents the manifestation of the relationship. In any case, both charts will be found to have many similarities, especially in regard to the outer planets, due to the cyclical nature of Astrology.
- Both individual charts can then be compared to the composite charts, which in theory should show what the relationship means to either one.
Hororary Chart Reading
A hororary chart is a chart for the present moment for some pertinent event, usually for an astrologer it is the exact time that a client first makes contact to arrange an appointment for a consultation, i.e. it is for the beginning of the whole reading process. This is the pertinent moment for the consultation, so it reflects what is important for the client at that moment, and whether the astrologer can help, or even whether the issue is determined at that time. An hororary reading has a number of its own special rules, to wit:
- The questioner, traditionally called the quesitor, is represented by the First House. It is their question, so this house also represents the question,
- The astrologer is represented by the Seventh House.
- Traditional house rulerships are used to see what the question pertains to.
- A state called 'perfection' is taken to show how the issue pans out, i.e. whether it comes about at all, or whether it turns out well or not.
For a question to be answerable at all, the Ascendant must be after 3 degrees and before 27 degrees, otherwise it is considered too early to tell, or too late as the issue is already resolved for better or worse.
The planet that rules the sign of the Ascendant - the chart ruler - is the representative of the question, and the house it occupies tells what the question is about, and aspects to the planet show the conditions of the issue. Perfection is represented by the next planet that the chart ruler meets before it itself changes sign, and meeting can take place by any major aspect. If no such meeting is to occur, then the planet is called 'void of course' and it indicates that nothing will come of the matter.
Perfection is a tricky issue, because from all the literature it is still unclear as to whether perfection is supposed to occur by the chart ruler moving to the position of the planet to be met, at the time of the question, or the position of that other planet at the time of the meeting, i.e. is it possible for the other planet to slip away from perfection by the chart ruler by changing signs first?
Perfection may occur by any aspect from conjunction to sextile, but some of these are traditionally considered better than others, such that perfection by a square, for instance, my produce a result, but one that would be regretted.
If no satisfactory answer can be gained from the chart ruler, the Moon can also be considered as always being a co-ruler of the chart. I suppose that the Moon is really how the quesitor feels about the question, both now and as things become resolved.
The outer planets, unknown to ancient Astrology, do not feature traditionally in hororary charts. But personally, I believe that they should, but always bearing in mind that their function is transmuting from fire to the other elements, hence they tend toward the application of meaning, rather than reality, so they would show such things as the effects of the past on the present, as laws of nature, as emotional states, and as recollections, although any of these can combine with other planets to form other things.
Life Chart Reading
When considering the life of someone who has passed, it is possible to create a composite chart and a Davison chart, for their entire life. Such a chart, the midpoints of birth and death, either as spirit, or as manifestation, should in theory give the prime of life for that person, the heart of their life. As such, the life chart [as I would call it] ought to be able to be taken as an indication of the karma that the individual takes from this life, and which then must form a large part of the possibilities for rebirth and the nature of subsequent incarnations.
Obviously it is extremely difficult to verify the claim I am making for this potential use of Astrology. However, if we are able to spot behaviour in one person, that seems very like behaviour in someone from the past, who pre-deceased their birth, and that earlier person's life chart bears suitable resemblance to the later person's birth chart; then at least the claim can be made for the possible connection, at least in meaning if not in fact, and anyway meaning and fact are truly one and the same thing.
Comparing the life chart for Benito Mussolini, and the birth chart for Donald Trump, gives so many similarities that I for one would make the suggestion that they form one of the best cases for reincarnation.
Other cases, few that they are, where reincarnation is claimed, are less convincing from an astrological perspective. But then we have very little research as yet to go on. Also, the issue may be complicated in many cases, by the supposition that many lifetimes' spirit is too much to incorporate into one new life, and so that much of the 'self' is effectively parked for the duration of a new life.
What the theory of life charts does reinforce, is the notion that what we do and experience in one life both affects its length, and the prospects for the next incarnation.
