Kathryn Harrison's background


Kathryn Harrison is a writer from California, and author of 'The Kiss'. The Kiss tells the autobiographical account of a four year incestuous relationship between Kathryn and her father, Edward, that only started when Kathryn was 20.


There was a lot of criticism of The Kiss, at its time of publication, but if you were to ask me, I'd say that it was all entirely unwarranted, because it is a compelling account of one of the shadier corners of human life. When critics react as they did, all it really does is expose their hypocrisy and prejudice, showing us what vile, inadequate human being they [the critics] are. Then again, we all have our faults!


Kathryn, for obvious reasons, kept her father's identity secret, in the book, but it didn't take too much to discover his identity, and more importantly for this, his birth data. This secrecy touches on the categorization of this example - should it be a relationship [which it was], or should it be a crime [which it also was]. Ultimately, I have placed it as crime, because so many features are the same as other sex crimes. The same dilemma exists for murders, where death and crime become valid alternatives. Incest between consenting adults may be seen as a victimless crime, but as with other abuses, any unequal power dynamic between individuals must undermine the morality of the act.


Key to this whole story is that Kathryn grew up estranged from her father, and it was not until one week when she was 20, that he made a visit to her and her mother, at their home in LA. That week revealed two things of a sexual nature; firstly that there was still that kind of connection between Kathryn's parents; and secondly, perhaps shockingly, that that kind of relationship could exist between Kathryn and her father.


At the end of the week Kathryn took her father to the airport, and it was there that he kissed her goodbye in an inappropriate manner, more suitable for lovers, which then led to a 4 year long incestuous interaction between them.


What makes Kathryn Harrison such a great example?


When spectacular occasions occur in the cycles of the planets, then as an astrologer you'd expect someone, somewhere on Earth, to live through some kind of spectacle, and when I discovered The Kiss, by Kathryn Harrison, in a charity shop in Tavistock, I also discovered one of those moments that usually only happen in fiction, Hollywood films, or as in this case, to others.


The Kiss

The turning point occurred on one particular weekend in 1981 when there was a spectacular, and rare [not to be repeated until August 1987,and then at 1 degree of Virgo], astrological coming together of the Sun, the Moon, Venus, and Mars, at 15 degrees of Aries, all within 45 seconds of arc!


This happened on Saturday, 4th April, at 12:45pm in Los Angeles, where 6 Leo was rising. Whether or not this was the precise moment of the Kiss is a moot point. But it was that weekend that it happened. What is important is that the astrology was extreme, the event was extreme, and that they happened in reasonably close proximity.


The players in this extended scene also have interesting astrological connections, especially Edward and Carole, Kathryn's long-divorced parents, who being born only few days apart share all the outer planet positions, but also have his Mars conjunct her Sun, and her Mars conjunct his Mercury, the former pair [his Mars, her Sun] are in a close inconjunct aspect to the Kiss stellium, and a sextile away from Edward's Jupiter.


Kathryn does not connect to this 15 degree point natally, but does connect to both parents through the same Sun opposite Neptune and Venus inconjunct Neptune [at 29 degrees Virgo]. Transiting Uranus [at 29 Scorpio] was trine her Sun, inconjunct her Venus. Also, the near conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter was inconjunct her Mercury and Chiron, semisextile her Pluto, and it echoed the near Jupiter Saturn conjunction in her natal chart.


Kathryn's Mercury and Jupiter are closely semisextile her father's Sun, and her Mercury opposes her father's Sun.


Notably, all three of them [Kathryn and her parents] share the same North and South Nodes. [see also:Paula Yates story (go to page) and that of Ed Gein(go to page) for other North Node connections.]


These astrological connections suggest that these three had things to work out together.


Four years after that Kiss, Kathryn's mother died, and with her death the incest came to an end. On that day, Mars [at 15 Libra] was exactly opposite where it had been at the time of the Kiss. This is the kind of confirmatory detail that magnifies any example, because it ties the two events that mark the beginning and end of this episode in someone's life. Mars may have little to do with her mother's death, but it has everything to do with Kathryn's action in ending the contact with her father.


I have no idea if this [following point] is correct, not knowing Kathryn's birth time, but I would assume from all the events that Kathryn has Libra rising, possibly even that 15 degree point - the reasoning being that the event of the original Mars position was described so much as Edward's action, hence involves otherness from him. Libra rising at 15 degrees would put Kathryn's birth time as 7:30pm. It is always a risk to stick one's neck out like this, and guess in public, but sometimes it is worth it.

What is particularly noticeable is the complete lack of close personal planet transits, suggesting a lack of autonomy on Kathryn's part. Also the trine from Uranus suggests surprise caused by another, i.e. Edward.
