Deborah Scaling's and Bradford Swift Cavanagh's background


Deborah Scaling, an experienced sailor, was one of two survivors of the 4 person crew + one passenger on the 58 foot yacht Trashman, that sank in severe stormy seas off the coast of North Carolina in late October 1982. The yacht left Maine approximately two weeks beforehand, stopping in at Annapolis, Maryland after about a week, on its way to be delivered to Florida.


Bradford Swift Cavanagh was at 21 the youngest of the crew of Trashman, yet probably the most competent of those on board when it came to dealing with a crisis.


Trashman sank on the 24th October, leaving the five on board with just an inflatable life raft, soon to be surrounded by sharks. Three lives were lost before, five days later, on the 28th October, a Russian ship rescued the two survivors, Deborah, and Brad.


Unfortunately there is insufficient data regarding the other three who had been on board Trashman, so we cannot examine their side of the story. However, the ordeal for the survivors appears to be worse than anything seen in Jaws.


What makes Deborah Scaling such a great example?

What is particularly notable is that Deborah was born with (marssaturn) a conjunction of Mars and Saturn, and that this was significant both in terms of the events, and the interaction with Brad.


It is likely that Trashman left Annapolis on or soon after the 17 October 1982. Because we don't know an exact date or time we must ignore the Earth and the Moon, but it is important that around the time that Trashman left Annapolis was the return of Mars to Deborah's Mars Saturn conjunction.


Another important factor is the position of Uranus, that is connecting to both Deborah's Sun and Pluto - she is about to find an awareness of death in a very impactful manner. NB. Uranus is in an applying sextile to her natal Sun, showing an open cause of that awareness, while it is in a departing square to natal Pluto, displaying a disconnect with others - which with the square often means effert is required, one way or another.

What is particularly notable is that Mars, having passed Deborah's natal conjunction of Mars and Saturn, had now reached transiting Neptune. This didn't directly affect Deborah, but was appropriate for the moment.


Trashman sank the 24 October 1982, and for Deborah, transits of Venus and Mars were now replaced by Sun and Mercury - she knows what is happening and is questioning what will happen with the others in the inflatable, and the circling sharks. Bear in mind that of the three who did not survive, one was badly injured, and the other two were quite unstable.


It is also notable that just before the sinking transiting Venus was conjunct transiting Pluto, and because Venus is as much about what we don't want, as what we do want, we can take this as a moment for being fearful of death, or in general terms the realities of anyone's situation.

What is particularly noticeable is the general replacement of difficult transts [red lines] by easier ones [blue lines].


Deborah and Brad were rescued after 5 days of their ordeal, on the 28 October 1982.


With transiting Sun and Venus conjunct her Neptune she was certainly aware of the kindness of strangers.

On the 23 August 2009 Deborah's son, John Kiley, drowned. While this seems unconnected to the sinking of Trashman, it was not unconnected to Deborah's Pluto and her awareness of death.
