Toni Kurz's background

Toni Kurz was an experienced German mountain climber. He died in 1936 during an attempt to climb the then-unclimbed north face of the Eiger.

Toni was climbing with his friend Andreas Hinterstoisser, and they met two Austrian climbers on the ascent, Edi Rainer and Willy Angerer. However a number of accidents overtook them, killing all three other climbers, and leaving Toni dangling on the end of a rope. Despite the efforts of rescuers, who were only just unable to reach him, Toni died of hypothermia the next day.
