Jean-Dominique Bauby was the editor of Elle magazine, until 1995 when he suffered a stroke and was completely paralysed except for being able to move one eyelid. Through this small movement he was able to communicate, and went on to write The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, published shortly before his death in 1997.
