Nietzsche, Salomé and Rilke's background

Fredrich Nietzsche (15 October 1844 - 25 August 1900) was one of the most famous philosophers of the Nineteenth Century. His most influential idea being that of the Ubermensch, or superman - not the comic book hero, but a concept of a man as exemplifying something greater than ordinary men. It was a dangeroud idea, because while his idea may have been innocent enough, advocating an artistic path to greatness, the philosophy has undoutedly given licence to dictators and other persecutors of humanity throughout the Twentieth Century. He is also known for claiming 'God is dead!', but then grafitti has it that God claims Nietzsche is dead. Joking aside, this was yet another frequently misunderstood statement, with many believing it a celebration of the end of religion, when it may well have been of a more regretful tone.

Lou Salomé (12 February 1861 - 5 February 1937) was a Russian-born psychoanalyst, and a well-traveled author, narrator, and essayist. We have a good time for Salomé's birth, so more features may be taken as accurate, e.g. Ascendant and Moon.

Rainer Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 - 29 December 1926) was an Austrian poet and novelist, who fell in love with the married Salomé in 1897, and carried on a relationship with her until 1900.

What makes Nietzsche, Salomé and Rilke such a great example?

1882 Nietzsche and Salomé

Fredrich Nietzsche was a well know figure as a writer, but unsuccessful in relationships with women. Much has been written about his handful of non-relationships, including the impulsive proposal to Mathilde Emilie Von Senger (Trampedach) within hours of meeting her. However, it would seem that his closest relationship, of sorts, though platonic, was with Lou Salomé, with whom he spent half of 1882. It seems this was ameeting of minds, not of passions, and in any case she is reported to have been against the idea of carnal or romantic relationships, at least until she met Rilke, which seems to have change her mind, although she nearly had an affair with George Ledebour. In any case, Rilke was undoubtedly the love of her life.

Other Relationships of Salomé's

While this page started life as a comparison of the remarkable astrology of Nietzsche, Salomé and Rilke, it became apparent that Salomé was the focus of greatest interest, and so the page is expanded to include some of her other relationships. Not all of these were romantic, by any means, although her reputation as a free spirit has rather led commentators to see fire where there was not necessarily even any smoke.

1882 Salomé and Paul Rée

Paul Rée was Salomé's best friend, and they lived together as brother and sister for many years prior to her marriage to Friedrich Carl Andreas. He was also instrumental in introducing her to Nietzsche.

1892 Salomé and Georg Ledebour

Georg Ledebour was a German journalist and politician, who inspired a passion in Salomé, although it appears that this was not acted on, although being a source of friction between her and Andreas.

1911 Salomé and Sigmund Freud

Salomé studied with Sigmund Freud, and there is a suggestion of a physical relationship, not to mention a hint of jealousy on the part of Freud over Salomé's involvement with Tausk.
