Shanti Devi was born in Delhi, India, in 1926; as a four-year-old she began claiming her real home was 90 miles away in Mathura, where her name was 'Lugdi'

She claimed she was a mother who died 10 days after childbirth. She accurately described her past husband, his clothing shop, her old home layout, and even a unique regional dialect she had never been exposed to.

Her case gained so much notoriety that Mahatma Gandhi appointed an official 15-member committee of political leaders, journalists, and scientists to investigate in 1935. They traveled with her to Mathura, where she flawlessly navigated the streets to her alleged home, identified her past-life relatives, and located a hidden floor cache where she used to keep money. The committee published a formal report in 1936 concluding she was indeed a genuine case of reincarnation.
