A mind not to be changed by place or time. Can make a heav'n of hell, a hell of heav'n - John Milton - Paradise Lost

I thought that I'd add a blog page, largely because I haven't yet finished coming up with ideas, although I do frequently go over old ground. Some of these thoughts don't immediately, if ever, make it onto a suitable page, and if someone has already read the earlier version, they may miss the addition in any case. So here it is - newest entry first. Lots of things will be incomplete, just because time is not always on my side. Lots of things will be just copied out here because they will show how my understanding has evolved over time, and so will give a clearer picture of anything else I publish.

15 January 2025 - Intentionality and Dualism
David Bentley Hart is far too religious for my liking, and seems confused about God and Evil. Simply answered, there is no God in the sense of an all powerful being who controls everything. So our lack of controls, except by physical limitations, allows for Evils to exist, especially those perpetrated by us. The ultimate evil is destruction, death, but there are worse things, which essentially are the negation of life during life.
Talking about Intentionality : Intention, literally inner holding, the ability to hold an image of an external thing within our minds. The thing about this is that we do not just hold an image, if we define image as what we see. We have multiple senses, and that tells us that there is a reality to the World that is beyond ideas. At least, the ideas of what we see are supported by the ideas of what we touch, and so on. It is all photons in the final analysis, but multiple arguments for the reality of real things. What we hold in mind is emergent from the brain activity consequential to sensing, and remembering, and imagining, which is a form of creative remembering. Intentionality is just another word for consciousness.
The Buddhist counter is non-attachment, the acceptance of destruction, which is one tactic for navigating life. However, an alternative is to understand everything and to then attempt to persuade people that there is a better way, which is to live in a non-destructive manner. Although death may be inevitable, we can understand that too, and avoid the destruction of life while we are living it. How do we understand? By using our imagination to think things through successfully. There is no limit to our ability to answer life's problems.
Understanding has to be based on both science and philosophy, because science tells us about reality and philosophy tells us about truth. There is a seeming paradox that Existence has this duality, but really science and truth are both manifestations of the same thing, it is our understanding of both that is incomplete, and so fails to see that Dualism is just one way to view Existence in its entirety.
The fundamental misunderstanding comes from our tendency to see parts rather than wholes, whereas Existence starts with wholes and from the whole(s) emerges the parts that form new wholes. Wholes are always virtual, that is they only exist as true facts about things, and the mind is formed from the creation/emergence [same thing] of subjective facts - inner holdings - and at the same time we inhabit a real world where wholes also emerge, but as objective facts.
The facts of the mind have parts that are composed of brain activity, while the facts of the world have parts composed of particles, atoms, protons, quarks, etc. But the facts of both, while appearing as a kind of dualism, have the same nature – that of being wholes, of being facts. The subjective and the objective are ultimately composed of the same thing, truth. Even your mistakes are true, they are your facts. The important thing to grasp is that facts are both eternal and vary in significance.
The significance thing ought to be self-evident. Some facts have greater impact than do others. But, the thing about significance is that it is the same thing as objectivity. The more objective a fact, the more significant it is. Again this should be self-evident. For example, feeling rich won't buy any shopping, while being rich will. What we need to understand is that by sharing our subjective facts we make them more significant, and so more objective. But there is more to this - because facts are eternal, they don't go away, they just fade into the distance, but more significant facts fade less. The main reason for this is that sharing facts takes nothing away from the original fact, whereas sharing reality, which is just rearranging deckchairs, always takes something away, because energy is conserved, which results from the nature of objective reality [matter].
Understanding the full gamut of Existence shows us that while our material bodies must die, the facts of our life cannot die, they can only fade as we create new facts for ourselves. In this lies the truth of spirit, the afterlife, and even resurrection as rebirth. In this manner we can overcome Evil, at least in principle. To do so, however, we have to make progress during our many lifetimes, and collectively learn to live in a non-destructive manner.
14 January 2025 - Cheating and the nature of truth
Prompted by Esther Perel reading an essay by Karen Jones about being the other woman.
Cheating, is it lying, and what does it tell us about the nature of truth?
Many people who have affairs do not tell their established partners. Some do, but possibly that is rare; infidelity, whether with consent, or not, is a minefield of potential disaster for established relationships, because it always carries a possible threat to the relationship, and in any case presents a very real commentary on it.
As for truth, only complete openness is honest, truthful, the same as reality - or is it? Openness is all about what is presented, whether the spoken word [air], or the actions [earth], but it is more than that, it is the objective sameness of true knowing [fire], that comes when feelings [water] are shared in actuality, that is, not just presented, but felt as if being the other.
Most connection falls short of the coincident [sameness] level of absolute truth, we so frequently fail to communicate well enough for that, and so with good reason hope to protect the feeling self of the partner, if we go even that far. So mostly we run our lives on coherent truth, we present a consistent set of facts, and omit uncomfortable points that may rock the boat. Such coherent truth, while not being a lie as such, is only accurate by ommission, and so is not truly honest, and is certainly not the whole truth. At times, some [Russians being a case in point] indulge in vranyo, convenient truth, which is really a lie, but one that both sides can live with, even knowing it is not truth, at least it may be bearable.
Looking at truth with the example of a relationship illustrates the three philosophical versions of truth. The elephant in this room is the unacceptable falsehood, the lie, and the mistake or misunderstanding. Giving the wrong answer, the wrong facts, will, in most circumstances, constitute a big fail.
Knowledge is truth, or rather true knowledge is truth; it is an awareness of what is - the complete facts. Not necessarily all the detail, because facts apply to wholes, and less so to parts [unless they be considered wholes themselves]. All the things we deal with are at the level of emergent wholeness. When we achieve this we have discovered fire, and are on a firm footing. The creation of true knowledge is the creation of love, and hate is its opposite; hate is a denial of love; the two cannot co-exist, except as parallel connections to complex objects such as people, when we can love some proportion of the other, but hate another aspect of them.
If we want to connect to others, and our human condition makes it imperative that we do - our survival depends upon it, or rather the state of our survival does; if we want that, and we do, we have to connect honestly, that is, we need to make love. I don't mean sex, or not just sex, all connection is love, and hate is disconnection through negative love, that ironically also connects, but like a virus, the hated is a part of us, despite us not liking it. Hate is as much an awareness as is love, but it is uncomfortable as it connects and separates, which is as hard to live with as an unrequited love, or a failed love that lives on.
An adversary, or a rival, doesn't have to be hated; if we are to play the game we may turn out winners or losers, both are important parts of life, and growth, and without competition there is no game. This is why playing fairly is the essence of sport, and why we not only dislike a cheat, but withhold credit from the winner who cheats, unless we indulge the sin because they are our winner, but this makes us cheats also. When anyone cheats there can be no true knowledge. Yes, life is muddy water, but it is all we have, while we are here.
Why is laughter such a mark of a good relationship?
The answer is that laughter, which astrologically is Jupiter in action, laughter is honest. It absolutely cannot happen without truth.
Mark Laita - Soft White Underbelly - said in a video [Denny] that ‘That subconscious belief that you have about yourself will dictate everything in your life.' The truth in this is that whatever our foundations are, they are all we have to build on, so everything is built on our beginnings. This is where the impact of the birthchart comes in, because we have new beginnings throughout life - new charts to build on - but all of them have to stand on the rubble of the first one, and it seems likely that the first one, being a reflection of our spirit at that point, is built on the rubble of our past lives, especially that of the most recent, or perhaps the most impactful, if it was extreme enough to cause a kind of PTSD that then colours everything, until such time as the issues get dealt with.
This brings us to the meaning of life. In a sense we all have the same meaning, which is to develop the ability to love, i.e. build relationships of genuine awareness of other. But that is kind of a fundamental, rather too general, in the same way that the physics of existence are fundamental, underpinning everything, but not really being pertinent to the issues in life, for the most part. The personal meaning of life, the reason any one of us is here in our own individual circumstances, is to manifest the meaning of our spirit, as mapped in the birthchart, in whatever way we can. Often that presents limited choices, but the issues we deal with can allow us to progress beyond our starting point, hopefully in a good way, and that means hopefully in a manner that allows some of the negatives we start out with to be lessened.
When we interact with others, especially when we help others, we do a lot to help ourselves.

25 December 2024 - AI
Digital computers, and their AI, are Chinese Rooms, i.e. no more aware of what they are doing than a stick [I am quoting Blindsight - the SF novel - when I say about the stick]. The only meaning is in the question input as language, and the picture output according to rules, even the question may just be a pictogram, as may be the answer. Neither of which are in themselves any more conscious of what they represent than is a Picasso. Lol, did Picasso really know what he was doing? Sometimes I think he was a bit of a fraud, or is that Freud?
14 March 2024 - Awareness
There is a difference between the truth of material reality, and the truth of conscious experience. That difference means that the trail of truth that is left by the past of material reality has a very low impact on the present of material reality. Anything material in the present is affected by what is locally actual, and by what is distant and in the past, within a universal reference frame. That gives the appearance of 4D reality, of 'time' laid out 'as if' it were a block universe, and it means that the emergent centre of the Universe is not located anywhere in the material part of the Universe, just as the centre of a ball is not located on the surface of that ball. That centre is not in any sense in the past, and the dimension that gets you to it is not in any way equivalent to time, although as a point in 4D space, that centre will not have moved much, except to vibrate as the universe around it changed. The centre of the universe is very much a feature of the present, although it too has a past. However, it is its present position that is involved in gravity, not any of its past positions - although, the centre is a virtual object, a truth, defined by the whole of the Universe, and no more, or less, a substantial thing now than it ever was in the past. That centre stands in simple relation to every material object in the Universe, and its ghost - the truth of where it was in the past - stands in simple relation to every past material object, and all these instances of the past also stand in relation to one another, as truths, but not as material realities.
It kind of raises a question about possibility, and the truth of possibility, and probability, and how all that contrasts to the definite truth of the past. But all that is a separate question.
Conscious awareness is very much more complex than simple physical awareness. The physical state essentially responds to gravity, with the added bonus of subjective changes, such as light, being thrown in. But this material reality is simple in contrast to the emergent states of conscious awareness. That simplicity means that the truth of the physical past makes not much of a ripple on the surface of the present. It's still waters may run deep, but they are as silent as the grave.
Conscious awareness, by contrast, is immensely complex, not only are the objects of consciousness composed of highly multi-dimensional facts, but those facts connect those objects to a host of other objects. We might think that material objects, such as computers and other tech, are complicated, and they are, but it is as nothing compared to the complexities of a child at play. Child's play is not as simple as it sounds, and as for adult games, well ... now you are talking! The tangled webs that grownups create, even when they are being honest, make mountains out of simple molehills.
Consciousness creates truth that is more than a match for the apparent truth of material reality. The physical nature of material reality may seem durable, but 3D existence is a loan that must be repaid. All material things must pass; they may leave a ghostly trail of what has been, but that truth is insubstantial, and as nothing in contrast to the complex truths that emerge from conscious activity. Aware conscious activity is an even greater pinnacle of truth, and the greatest levels of awareness must include all the emergent elemental combinations inherent as potential in any situation, i.e. to wring the last drop of potential truth out of each experience, we'd need to be fully aware of every implication, whether it be the scientific technicalities involved, or any other intellectual aspect to the situation, through to its political, social, psychological consequences, together with the multitude of human [and animal] emotions, hopes, wishes, dreams and memories, that are also involved in anything we do when we are conscious life. All of these aspects contribute to the truth of our awareness, and while we are all capable of great intensity, if we want mahatma - great spirit - then we'd do well to cultivate as broad an experience as we possibly can.
That said, we'd also do well to tread lightly on other people's dreams. We are all in this together, and as they teach in school with ABC - actions bring consequences. Everything that we are swims in the same pool as everyone else, and if we pollute that pool in the manner in which a Trump, a Putin or a Netanyahu does, then we commit a crime against God, or rather against the greater spiritual existence that is the eternal truth of everything that ever was.
29 January 2024 - Truth
In John, it says that Jesus says 'The truth will set you free', but why should that be ? The truth can be as much of a prison as anything. However, the truth frees you from addiction to the unknown possibilities of want. This is unlike more sensation [air], because the next hit of the 'drug' may get you high, or some relief, but it always feeds the addiction. This is why anything can be addictive. Truth that fills the emptiness does not create more space for the addiction.
Pluto is both one's power and one's prison. It is the application of what is true on what is real, and what is real can only comply, it must obey. Pluto is divide and conquer, or any other change to any other difference, when that change comes about in accordance with the laws of truth, which is the necessary component of changing earth. The plus side is that Pluto is the resurrection as well as the destruction. The truth of one's own self is the spirit, and must necessarily be in the moment of any future moment that matches it. Not that any such moment can match exactly, but any spirit that partially fits, will have the possibility of rebirth at that moment. At which point it is to be hoped that what one did in one's last life has improved the prospects for the new life. This is karma.
When a Donald, or an Adolf, comes back, they may like the shitty personality that their karma gives them, after all, it fits them to a tee. But the only way that their spirit evolves to something better is by experiencing the downside of being Trump, and eventually relinquishing the practice of being Trump. Killing Vlad would not change Vlad, he'd still come back as a piece of shit, just like last time - where it really looks like he may have been the reincarnation of Nicholas I, or at least the Tsar's traits, which is his spirit, so Putin is old Nick. The same truth applies to the whole of a country, as much as to individual citizens, so America must educate Maga to not want guns, not eradicate the people with guns. Russians must develop some backbone if they are to ever be more than serfs.
If it is not obvious, this is why capital punishment is never right, not just 'even' for the most heinous crimes, but especially for the most heinous crimes, and that is entirely before taking into consideration the awkward fact that they very often get the wrong guy.
Neptune is both one's inspiration and one's undoing, one's hope and despair, what is true wounds us, creating a space that we feel because it moves us, moves our heart, moves our centre, and some of us become unbalanced. See, the clues are there in the language we use, because as sapient individuals we know stuff.
Uranus is both the free realisation of what is true, and the dogmatic blinkers of belief in lesser truth that ignores some of what is known, and most of what could be known. Ultimately Uranus senses truth, but no truth is the whole truth. Even the truth of numbers has limited context, i.e. is only wholly true when limited to the abstractions of mathematics.
15 January 2024 - Causes - aetiology
The elements are just a shorthand for expressing the possible relational connections between objects of every kind, i.e. real objects, ideal objects, mind objects, and self objects. Without Existence there are no numbers, no elements, no rules, no gods, no space, and no time.
Existence of the void is the naked truth of unity, of being whole, of oneness. By Leibniz' Law such oneness is the same for each and every object, of any kind.
This truth precludes any actual duality, as all things necessarily share the same the same property of unity, of being one individual thing. However, many kinds of thing may emerge from the basic numerical facts.
Properties are facts of the matter, even when the matter is a simple truth, such as exist of numbers. Facts are truths.
The first truth is wholeness, but the facts of wholeness are potentially paradoxical:
- Each thing is whole, a unity.
- Every whole defines its own parts by relationships of containing.
- Parts are necessarily less than wholes, or else they would be wholes [this is where Leibniz trumps Cantor].
- Every pair of parts defines a midpoint as a truth.
- Every whole defines a heart, a centre that is the midpoint of all its own midpoints.
- The heart of any one thing may be paradoxically indefinable, except by the wholeness of the thing itself.
- Paradox creates as emergence.
Various competing theories for the ways that things are, tend to be called ontologies - the logos of being. But to describe the facets of Existence we may well need more categories for being than just the catch all of 'ontology'.
Not only are there the possible relationship types, giving four elements, or states of being,
Water - a void, of any description, that which cannot be known except by inference [usually by feeling, when it comes to people], the space defined by what is. The subjective whole that is also the empty heart.
Fire - a truth, of any description, that which is a fact, that which is objective, and which generally is the same as some truth maker, i.e. is true of some whole thing. The most fundamental truth is that of the number one.
Earth - a reality, of any description, that which is differentiated from other things, and therefore causes emergent space, and is subject to emergent time whenever any real thing changes.
Air - an idea, of any description, an iconic model that subjectively forms an analogue of some other thing that may itself be of any kind.
From Water to Fire - Creation
From any void comes the emergence of something. This is the defining of existence as truth - whatever is true must start to exist as true facts, and these are the eternal spirit of all things, because there is no process that subtracts truth - truth is always an addition.
Leads to an ontology - the reasons of being
From Fire to Earth - Necessity
From truth follows necessity, the way that the effect of truth is to produce laws of the nature of things - literally the laws of nature, of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology. All become necessary based on the facts of what has emerged.
Leads to a realology - the reasons of difference.
From Earth to Air - Change
Whenever anything changes, some thing produced from the laws of its nature transfers from one object to another object, producing change. Change produces Time, and leads to Gravity because change at one place appears as change everywhere
Leads to an iconology - the reasons of knowing, through not just sensing parts, but the conveyance of wholes.
From Air to Water - Possibility
Whenever anything changes, it changes in itself, adopting a new abstract of what is and what is not the self, and creating some new possibility as a potential of being. The non-being may not yet have form, nor substance, but it has the silhouette of a shape, from which emergence can occur, if that shape has paradoxical properties. It may also match some already extant truth that therefore is a fitting potential destiny for that individual to discover.
Leads to an ipsisology - the reasons of self.

11 May 2023
I saw an interesting wiki about Orestes and the Furies [following a link from the Browning Version, prompted by a post that was just about Browning], from the play Agamemnon, whose muder by his wife Clytemnestra, and hers by their son Orestes, leads to the rule of law, rather than the retaliation of the Furies, because of the justice of Athena. This then led to me reading about the two Ajaxes, and Cassandra. Ajax, according to Graves, means 'of the earth', leading me to think of bread and wine - NB. They are on what I see as the female side of the battle [the Greeks], while Cassandra seems to be 'rising' and 'man' - on the male side [the Trojans]. So maybe we attribute the success in battle to bread [food in general] and the defeat of Man's erection to wine - symbolically in the rape of Cassandra by Ajax the lesser. Ajax the Greater loses out to Odysseus, in the argument over Achilles' armour, i.e. which is most effective in battle, and wisdom beats physical prowess when it comes to winning.
